The energy efficiency project of the Chisinau City Hall urges city residents to join the Earth Hour campaign

The European energy efficiency project managed by the City Hall of Chisinau municipality urges the residents of the Capital to join the Earth Hour campaign. Hence, on March 31, 2012, at 21:30, millions of people around the world will switch off their lights for one hour, in order to draw attention to the energy waste.

The impulse to join the global Earth Hour campaign was printed on 700 posters. These were placed in 250 trolleybuses and 100 buses. Therewith, the posters also contain useful tips that, being implemented, would significantly reduce energy consumption. “It is very easy to save energy and everyone can do it, particularly when prices for traditional energy resources increase. Few know that room lighting makes about one third of the electricity bill. Like this, it is so simple to turn off the light when leaving the room”, explains Daniela Franţujan, manager of the project “Increasing energy efficiency of Chisinau and Sevastopol municipalities based on existing positive experience”. The project is managed by the Chisinau City Hall, in partnership with IDIS “Viitorul” (Moldova), Sevastopol municipality (Ukraine), Union of Municipalities of the Marmara Region and University of Marmara (Turkey), ICLEI European Secretariat GmbH (Germany), with the financial support of the European Commission granted through the CIUDAD programme (Cooperation in Urban Development and Dialogue).

In addition to the placing of promotional posters entitled “Use Eco-Logically” in the municipal public transport, the project component of energy education includes the acquisition of best practices from the project partners of Germany and Turkey. Recently, there were produced and distributed bags and booklets with the same slogan “Use Eco-Logically”.

To encourage the use of energy efficient technologies, the project has financially supported the participation of eight local companies and one Ukrainian company in the specialized exhibition - MOLDENERGY 2012. In September 2011, four educational institutions have been awarded within an Energy Efficiency Competition. On the whole, about 437 double-pane windows have been installed, the value of works amounting to 100.000 Euro.

Further, the experts selected by IDIS „Viitorul” will complete three feasibility studies in the areas: efficient street lighting, traffic optimization and thermal insulation of residential buildings. The studies aim to prepare the authorities of the Chisinau municipality to attract investments and infrastructure development projects. As well, an Energy Efficiency Strategy is to be developed for the Chisinau municipality.
